SEO from a master: What I learned on my time off

Sometimes time off is not exactly what you want — but it turns out to be what you need.

I had the good fortune during my week off this week to “attend” a virtual SEO conference — SMX Next. This is put on by the same people who do the highly valued SMX conferences — including SMX East in New York.

Thankfully, knowing that people are missing out on some good knowledge by sitting at home and not traveling, SMX decided to go the virtual route (and didn’t charge a penny, to boot).

Sessions ranged from paid search and PPC to my personal favorite, good ol’ organic search. But I got the most — not surprisingly — out of a session by Bruce Clay. Clay, who is regarded by many as the “father of SEO” (he got his company started in the 1990s), presented his six truths of SEO.

To those who know Bruce’s work, they’ve heard them before — my favorite is this: SEO is only finished when Google stops updating and your competition dies. In other words, SEO never ends!

Think about it — Google is always making changes, whether it’s the search algorithm or the tools they provide. And your competition will always try to stay a step ahead.

So if you think that you’re done with SEO once you’ve built your site, that is a HUGE mistake.

More to come from SMX Next! See you soon!
